Suspended and Lush: Hanging Greenery at Broncos Leagues Club's Bar & Bistro

Key Info

Client: Broncos Leagues Club / BSPN
Market Sector: Clubs & Hospitality
Project Classification: Moderate

When Broncos Leagues Club set out to transform its bar and bistro into a premium hospitality destination, suspended greenery was central to the design vision. Working with BSPN Architecture, Evergreen Walls supplied and installed over 21 linear metres of cascading artificial hanging greenery across three suspended planters - a lush, layered botanical canopy that anchors the ceiling plane, softens the space, and delivers a genuinely striking first impression. Zero maintenance. Permanent impact.

The Vision

The Broncos Leagues Club underwent a full transformation of its restaurant, bar, and gaming areas β€” unifying previously disconnected spaces into a cohesive, welcoming hospitality destination designed to attract a broader demographic and encourage guests to linger.

BSPN Architecture's design vision centred on a serene yet luxurious atmosphere: tranquil rather than dark, comfort-driven rather than sports-typical. Materiality was elevated throughout β€” coloured concrete, vibrant wallpaper, copper detailing, custom joinery β€” with suspended planters called out as a key feature element that would bring organic warmth and lush character to the bar and bistro zones above the heads of guests.

The greenery brief was clear: cascading, layered, and unapologetically lush. Evergreen Walls was engaged to supply and install artificial hanging greenery across three suspended planters spanning over 21 linear metres β€” delivering a statement botanical installation that would perform as a permanent architectural feature with zero ongoing maintenance.

The Process

Three suspended planters were installed across the sports bar: two at 8,290mm and one at 4,500mm in length, each 400mm wide and 300mm deep. At approximately 8 plants per linear metre across 21.08 metres total, the installation required a carefully considered mix of species to achieve the density, movement, and layered realism the design demanded.

The plant mix was selected to create contrast in leaf form, length, and texture β€” working together as a single cohesive canopy rather than a repetitive row of identical plants:

Syngonium Hanging Bush and Pothos Variegated formed the shorter, denser base layer β€” filling volume close to the planter edge and creating a full, abundant starting point for each arrangement.

Fern Hanging Bush and Pothos Green introduced mid-length trailing forms, adding movement and a naturalistic variation in drop height across the length of each planter.

Angel Vine Hanging Bush and Pothos Variegated provided the longest cascading elements β€” trailing dramatically below the planter line to create the lush, organic drape that defines the installation's character from across the room.

Planting was intentionally non-continuous, with greenery stopping and starting along each planter run to avoid the artificial regularity that immediately reads as fake. Final shaping and arrangement was completed on site, allowing the team to respond to lighting, sightlines, and the rhythm of the joinery in real time.

The Result

The completed installation brings the Broncos Leagues Club's bar and bistro to life from above. The suspended planters read as a single continuous canopy of cascading greenery β€” lush, layered, and entirely convincing β€” anchoring the ceiling plane and drawing the space together in a way that no other material element could.

The non-continuous planting approach and varied drop lengths give the installation an organic, garden-like quality that holds up at close range as much as it does from across the room. Combined with the venue's elevated materiality and refined Broncos heritage references, the greenery contributes to an atmosphere that feels genuinely premium β€” tranquil, considered, and built to impress.

Because every plant is artificial, the installation requires no watering, no seasonal replacement, and no access at height after handover. It will look exactly the same on opening night as it will three years from now.

FAQ's

Q: Can artificial hanging plants be used in commercial club and hospitality venues?

Yes. Artificial hanging greenery is increasingly specified for clubs, bars, and restaurants across Australia. It delivers the same visual impact as live planting without the ongoing maintenance, access requirements, or irrigation needs β€” making it the practical choice for high-use venues where greenery needs to perform long term.

Q: How do you make artificial hanging plants look realistic in a large installation?

The key is variation. Using a mix of species at different drop lengths and leaf textures, and planting in a non-continuous style β€” stopping and starting along the planter rather than running uniformly β€” creates the organic, garden-like quality that makes an installation convincing at close range and at scale.

Q: How many plants are needed per linear metre for suspended planters?

For a lush, full result, we typically specify around 8 plants per linear metre across suspended planters. The exact density depends on species mix, drop length, and how the planter will be viewed β€” from below, at eye level, or across a room.

Q: What artificial plants work best for suspended or hanging planters?

Trailing varieties with varied foliage perform best β€” Pothos (green and variegated), Syngonium, Angel Vine, and Birds Nest Fern are all strong performers in suspended applications. Combining short, mid, and long drop lengths within the same planter creates a layered, naturalistic canopy effect.

Q: Do artificial hanging plants fade under venue lighting or near windows?

Standard artificial plants can degrade under prolonged UV exposure near windows or skylights. For installations in sun-exposed positions, UV-rated variants β€” such as our Angel Vine UV β€” should be specified to ensure colour and structural integrity is maintained long term.

Q: Can artificial suspended planters be installed as part of a new venue fitout?

Yes β€” suspended planter installations are best coordinated during the fitout stage, allowing fixings and structural supports to be built in by others ahead of the greenery installation. Evergreen Walls works directly from architectural documentation to ensure planting is precisely specified and ready to install on schedule.
