Greenery as Architecture - The St Marys Diggers & Band Club Refurbishment

Key Info

Client: St Marys Diggers and Band Club Ltd
Market Sector: Clubs & Hospitality
Project Classification: Moderate

The Vision

St Marys Diggers & Band Club, a landmark community venue in Western Sydney, underwent a major multi-zone refurbishment designed to reposition the club as a premium hospitality destination. The brief called for a bold, nature-inspired interior that would feel lush and immersive across several distinct areas - from the main restaurant and bar through to the bowls viewing lounge and outdoor terrace.

Architect GroupN envisioned artificial greenery as a central design material, integrated directly into the architecture of the space rather than applied as decoration. Evergreen Walls was engaged to supply and install a large-scale commercial artificial plant solution spanning multiple zones, working closely with the project team to deliver a cohesive botanical interior at a scale and complexity suited to one of the region's most significant club refurbishments.

The Process

The scope covered four distinct zones across the venue, each requiring a tailored commercial artificial plant installation designed to suit its architectural context.

Restaurant - Beam Garland System
Running the full length of the restaurant's exposed timber beam structure, a continuous artificial garland installation was layered along the top face and sides of the overhead beams, incorporating a rich mix of tropical foliage including monstera, pothos, and fern varieties. The result is an unbroken green canopy that visually connects the entire dining room from entry to kitchen, softening the ceiling plane and reinforcing the garden-in-a-room aesthetic conceived by the design team.

Bar - Overhead Ceiling Garden
The centrepiece of the fitout is an extraordinary artificial ceiling garden suspended above the central bar. A large-format circular copper and steel overhead rig supports a dense, layered installation of mixed trailing and upright artificial plants - including ferns, pothos, ivy, and string of pearls - cascading at varying heights to create a dramatic botanical canopy above the bar. Terracotta pots planted with a mix of artificial indoor plants line the upper shelving of the bar structure, reinforcing the indoor-garden atmosphere at every level. This feature stands as one of the most visually complex hanging greenery installations Evergreen Walls has delivered in a club environment.

Bowls Viewing Lounge - Planter Boxes
Along the window line of the bowls viewing lounge, built-in timber planter boxes were planted with a lush arrangement of artificial ferns, Boston ferns, and mixed tropical foliage. Paired with large statement planters holding artificial palms and tropical specimens, this zone transitions seamlessly between the interior and the outdoor bowling green beyond.

Outdoor Terrace - Statement Planters
On the alfresco terrace, oversized artificial bird of paradise and banana leaf specimens were installed in large-format pots, anchoring the outdoor space with bold, tropical character consistent with the interior aesthetic.

All greenery was supplied with a moss topping across the planter installations, replacing standard mulch for a premium, botanical finish throughout.

The Result

The completed venue is a striking example of how large-scale artificial greenery can function as a primary architectural element β€” not merely as decoration, but as a defining feature that shapes the atmosphere, zoning, and identity of a major hospitality space. From the continuous beam garlands of the restaurant to the spectacular overhead bar garden, the greenery at St Marys Diggers & Band Club delivers a level of visual richness and botanical immersion rarely achieved in club fitouts of this scale.

The maintenance-free artificial plant installation ensures the venue will retain its lush, premium appearance long-term, with no irrigation, no plant replacement, and no ongoing horticultural costs β€” a critical advantage in a busy, high-traffic club environment.

This project demonstrates Evergreen Walls' capability to deliver complex commercial greenery fitouts in close collaboration with leading architects and builders, across multiple zones and at a scale that transforms an entire venue.
