The Vision

Chirnside Shopping Centre in Melbourne’s outer east set out to revitalise its food court with a contemporary ceiling greenery refresh. The aim was to soften the hard lines of the architecture and create a warmer, more inviting dining atmosphere.

The centre’s design team wanted to introduce suspended planter boxes integrated within the existing timber ceiling frames - a concept that would add natural texture without disrupting the clean geometry of the space.

Evergreen Walls was commissioned to design, supply, and install a bespoke arrangement of UV-stable artificial plants, delivering the lush realism of live greenery with none of the maintenance. The goal was clear: to create a durable, high-impact installation that would instantly elevate the environment for both tenants and visitors.

The Process

The project was delivered in collaboration with Mainbrace Constructions, who managed the broader retail fit-out. Evergreen Walls worked closely with their team to engineer a seamless, after-hours installation that ensured zero disruption to trade — a hallmark of our commercial fit-out expertise.

Each suspended planter box was designed as a self-contained greenery feature. At the centre of each, Cordyline served as a striking focal point, surrounded by a natural cascade of Spider Plant, Golden Pothos, Boston Fern, and Variegated Philodendron.

The foliage was hand-arranged to achieve depth and organic variation. Installation methods combined foam infill and direct mechanical fixing, depending on planter depth and weight distribution. The boxes were refinished in Dulux Monument Satin, chosen to harmonise with the ceiling’s timber grid and the retail centre’s existing palette.
